Your journey
Day 1: Padang to Siberut Island and your tribe
stay
Your adventure begins with a hotel pick-up in Padang in the morning. At 07:00, you take the Mentawai fast ferry from Muara Port, Padang, to Siberut Island. The crossing takes about 6 hours, including a 1-hour stopover in the north of Siberut. From Siberut port, we travel to a nearby transit village. There we board a traditional motorised dugout canoe and travel along the river through lush jungle. At the trekking point, we continue on foot through the rainforest to the Mentawai clan house. Expect some swampy (Peat swamp forest) and muddy ground on the way. At the end of the trek, you meet the Mentawai shaman and his family, and begin to see their traditions and way of life up close.
- Accommodation:
Traditional Mentawai house
- Meals:
Lunch and dinner
Good to know: The canoe journey depends on the
water level in the river, so we cannot always guarantee it. If the river is too
low, we will arrange another way to travel, such as a scooter or a truck. You
may then need to walk further on foot to reach the jungle area where the tribe lives.
Days 2 and 3: Living with the Mentawai family
These two days are the heart of the journey. You explore the jungle and live as the Mentawai do, following your hosts through their day. You can learn jungle skills such as weaving a basket, tray or bag from rattan or leaves, as the Mentawai do every day. You can also see how poison for bows and arrows is made, and learn what survival in the jungle means for the people who live there. There will be more other activities during your stay with the tribe, where you can join and learn about their way of life.
- Accommodation:
Traditional Mentawai house, with the host family
- Meals:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Reminder: This experience will stretch your
comfort zone. It is not a list of tourist highlights. There is no fixed
itinerary or set activity, only a deep dive into local life and culture.
Day 4: Farewell and return to Padang
After breakfast, you say goodbye to your host family and
trek back to the riverbank. A motor canoe takes you to the transit village near
Siberut port, where you can wash and tidy your things at a local Mentawai
house. After lunch, you leave Siberut by fast ferry at 15:00. The expected
arrival in Padang is 18:30. We then transfer you to the hotel or hostel of your
choice, and the tour ends.
- Accommodation:
None
- Meals:
Breakfast and lunch
Note: We may change the itinerary because of the weather, river levels or safety. As your local guides, we make these decisions based on our local knowledge and experience to ensure the safety of everyone.

What to expect
This is not a conventional trip, so we want to be honest
about the conditions.
- Basic
living. You sleep on a floor mat under a mosquito
net. There is no electricity and no toilet.
- Demanding
terrain. Expect mud, slippery ground, and log
bridges. Mentawai families lay logs over muddy ground to cross to the next
path.
- Climate.
It is hot and humid all year, from 31 to 33°C. The driest months are May
to early September. The wettest are November to January.
- Power. There
is no electricity in the jungle. Charge your phone, camera, and other
devices before you leave. We strongly recommend bringing spare batteries
and power banks.
- Simple
conditions. Host families welcome us into their homes
and live in isolated areas with very limited means. Comfort and
cleanliness are basic and will not match Western standards. Accepting this
for a few days will help you enjoy the whole experience.
The right mindset
The conditions can be challenging and will push you beyond
your comfort zone. To get the most from the journey, and to keep the whole
group safe and comfortable, we ask every guest to bring:
- Mental
preparation. An open mind and a real willingness to
accept discomfort as part of the experience.
- Flexibility.
The ability to adapt to changes in conditions or plans without
frustration.
- Cultural
awareness. A basic understanding of Mentawai culture
and jungle life before you travel. Your guide will give you a full
briefing and cultural orientation before the trip starts.
Travelling respectfully
- Be
ready to rough it. Many Mentawai communities live without the comforts
most travellers are used to.
- Give
yourself time to connect with your hosts.
- Be
yourself. Show interest in your hosts and learn from them.
- Be
present. Your hosts want you to enjoy your time with them.
- Leave
expensive items at home, such as watches, necklaces, bracelets, and
earrings. They may attract attention, and your hosts may ask you for them.
This can make the situation uncomfortable and may affect your relationship
with the community.
- Always
ask permission before taking photographs.
Our commitment

of the community ourselves, we can guide you with respect, insight and
